London-based artist Cara Tolmie works across sound, voice, performance and film to explore the ways in which meaning is created and in particular, how context shifts our reception and understanding of events. She completed two new major projects in 2013 ; Pley, commissioned and produced by Picture This - a moving image work and installation presented as a solo exhibition in Spike Island, April 2013; and Otiumfold, a year-long residency with the Chisenhale Gallery and Victoria Park in London’s East End consisting of six public workshops / events and a new group performance in Victoria Park, July 2013. Both projects experimented with a range of exercises in order to scrutinise the interpersonal relations between groups of people navigating their own performative investigations into play, improvisation and language.

Recent solo exhibitions and events include Pley at Spike Island, Bristol (2013), One must force the frozen circumstances to dance by singing to them their own melody, Pavilion, Leeds, Stages in the Revolution at the Whitstable Biennale with lll? (2012), Myriad Mouth Line, Frieze Projects, Frieze Art Fair, London (2011) and Read Thou Art and Read Thou Shalt Remain at Dundee Contemporary Arts (2011). Her work has also been included in numerous group events, including Vocal Folds at Nasjonal Museet, Oslo (2013), Deep Cuts at Marres, Maastricht (2012), Her Noise: Feminisms and the Sonic at Tate Modern, London (2012). She also collaborates with musician and artist Paul Abbott and in band Rude Pravo with Luke Fowler and Stevie Jones.
