Alexis Teplin

Teplin’s practice is routed in abstract painting that extends to include sculpture, performance and video. Concerned with the visual strategy of painting, Teplin uses art historical references to construct a theatricality based in seduction, repulsion, artificiality and cultural signification.

Alexis Teplin was born in California. She received her B.A. from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1998 and her MFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 2001. She was the recipient of the Starr Foundation Scholarship at the Royal Academy Schools 2002/3.

Most recent solo exhibitions include ‘sss T !!’, Hayward Gallery, London; 'He, Ho, HA, hmmm...' Mary Mary, Glasgow (both 2013);'Progress Pleas’, Hotel, London (2012) and 'The Other Side of Paradise,' Car Projects, Bologna (2011).

Teplin has collaboratively written and produced performances at Tramway, Glasgow (2010); Serpentine Gallery Park Nights programme (2009), as part of their Serpentine Cinema screenings (2011) and been included group exhibitions such as 'Costume: Written Clothing', Tramway, Glasgow (2013) and 'Painting Show,' Eastside Projects, Birmingham (2011).

Her work has been reviewed in ArtForum, Frieze Magazine, Art Review and been featured in the Independent, the Guardian and Time Out.
