David Bate is a photo-artist and writer. His recent works include Australian Picnic, Bungled Memories and Zone and have been exhibited widely, including many venues in the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Canada, USA, Ireland, Estonia, Italy and Spain. Recent exhibitions include Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago and he is represented by Hoopers Gallery in London.
His writings include the books Photography and Surrealism: Sexuality Colonialism and Social Dissent, 2004 and Photography: Key Concepts, 2009, but also dozens of articles and essay in other books. His work has been concerned with themes of identity, otherness and the distinctions between fact/fiction and reality and fantasy and more recently the theme of globalization and its impact in and on everyday life.
He studied Film and Photography at the Polytechnic of Central London and art history in the Fine Art Department at the University of Leeds. He is currently Professor of Photography at the University of Westminster, London.
