Alec Finlay is an internationally recognised artist, poet and publisher based in Newcastle Upon Tyne. In residencies at BALTIC, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and NaREC he has produced a series of acclaimed participative projects, including innovative publications, large-scale interventions, and social and geographical mappings. Finlay describes his work as ‘microtonal,’ combining a number of smaller elements within a wider field. The results vary in media, from text, sculpture and collage, to audio-visual and new technologies. He is the publisher of over 20 books and recipient of 2 Scottish Design Awards. In 2010, Finlay was shortlisted for the Northern Art Prize. He is currently artist in residence at the University of Northumbria, where he is developing skying, a project focused on renewable energies and the aesthetics of the wind-turbine. In 2012, Finlay will exhibit a new microtonal work for the prestigious Biennale of Sydney, exploring the twinned themes of ecology and economy.
