A fine artist and critical author, Alistair Payne explores paintings interdisciplinary potential, informed by a critical engagement with philosophy. He is currently Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Wolverhampton.

A fine artist and critical author, Dr Payne gained his PhD in 2006 at Chelsea College of Art and Design, completing the doctoral thesis: “Redefine and Reterritorialise: Painting as an Interdisciplinary Form”. Prior to this achievement Dr Payne was awarded a Masters Degree in Fine Art by the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (1998), and gained a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from the University of Hertfordshire (1995). He currently teaches Fine Art at the University of Wolverhampton.

An exploration of paintings interdisciplinary potential has influenced Dr Payne’s recent work, the methodology of which has been informed by critical engagement with the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze. Developed in this context, the installation piece “Leviathan’s Slumber” was shown at the “Three Colts Gallery”, London as part of the “Ebb and Flow” touring exhibition (2005). Indicative of Dr Payne’s emergent international profile, “Untitled”, a looped DVD projection, was created for the “RAID Projects Gallery”, Los Angeles in 2006. Further work has included “Monolith and Austria”, both completed at the request of the “MOT Gallery”, London (2004). Dealing with the notion of an “expanded practice” in painting, the project formed part of a group exhibition conceived in response to the theoretical writings of Rosalind Krauss.
