University Of Duisburg-Essen, Germany

Professor Philipp Schmiemann

I am a biology and chemistry teacher. After working in school I did my PhD at University of Duisburg-Essen, German. During my PhD I worked in a project called “biology in context”. In this project groups of teachers worked together developing learning material to implement the new national educational standards in Germany.

My thesis was about modelling biology content knowledge in the fields of heredity, circulatory system, and development (ontogenesis). In my postdoc time I was responsible for a project about worked-out examples, a special kind of learning tasks, and a project about final exams in biology. In this project we analysed the items of the final exams in biology in our federal state in cooperation with the Ministry of Education.

From 2011 to 2013 I worked at Freie University Berlin as assistant professor and started my research on models and modelling, because Berlin is a hot spot in this field in Germany. Since summer 2013 I am back at University of Duisburg-Essen as full professor.
