Associate Professor Geoff Wake has a degree in engineering science and a strong track record of research and curriculum development in mathematics education with a focus on mathematical applications and modelling.
Geoff’s research focuses on applications of mathematics in a range of settings including schools/colleges and workplaces. This has informed a wide range of work in curriculum and assessment development, both in this country and internationally. His recent and ongoing work has been concerned with student participation in mathematics in transition through upper secondary, 16-19 education and into university, and the teaching of problem solving and inquiry skills in these age ranges and additionally in lower secondary school. The motivation and engagement of students in the STEM subjects, through active and enquiry-based learning has been important throughout this work.
Teacher professional learning is an important aspect of Geoff’s most recent research and development work. He is currently working with colleagues to explore how lesson study communities might be initiated, developed and sustained to support teachers’ professional learning.
