Attribution of E91 (opening ee3) to 'dompnus wyllimus stratford monachus stratfordie' has caused confusion between two convents of similar name: Stratford-atte-Bowe (Middlesex) and its near-neighbour, Stratford Langthorne (Essex). Although well-connected, the Benedictine house at Stratford-atte-Bowe was a female convent: we therefore need to look to the male Cistercian house at Stratford Langthorne. This was a wealthy house, yielding at annual income of £511 in 1535; a William Hyccheman, prior (-1499-1516-) (Victoria County History...Essex, II, 129-33).
