SUMMER Study: Optimising The SUrgical Management of Otitis Media With Effusion in ChildRen

We are pleased to announce the launch of the SUMMER Study, which aims to audit the rates of concurrent adenoidectomy in children undergoing grommet placement for otitis media with effusion (OME). Following a recent change in NICE guidance, adenoidectomy is now recommended in all cases, not just those with nasal symptoms. This study will explore the impact of this new guidance across multiple hospitals in the North East, with the goal of promoting the adoption of adenoidectomy during the first grommet placement and reducing the need for subsequent surgeries.

Proposed Timeline:

• Proposal release: 13th January 2025
• Registration period: 27th January 2025
• Data collection deadline: 28th February 2025
