ELIM-I

The Early Language Identification Measure and Intervention (ELIM-I) is a universal offer designed to support the identification of children's speech, language and communication needs, and to provide tailored support to families. ELIM-I is designed for use with all children attending their 2-2 ½ year Healthy Child Review.

Below you will find a brief overview of the measure and intervention. Further information and corresponding resources may be found on the page ELIM-I Measure and Intervention Resources

The ELIM-I Measure

The ELIM-I measure is a universal assessment of speech, language and communication for use within the 2-2 1/2 year Healthy Child Review.

The measure includes 2 sections:

  • 50-item word list: to be completed with families during the review
  • Practitioner observation: to be carried out throughout the review

The measure should be used in conjunction with the ELIM-I Guidance Handbook, the eLfH Best Start in Speech, Language and Communication programme and the training resources on this website.

The ELIM-I Intervention

To support the outcome of the ELIM-I measure, a set of ELIM-I intervention resources have been developed in collaboration with BBC's Tiny Happy People.

Resources have been co-designed with parents/carers, health visiting and education pracitioners and are designed to support practitioners to provide tailored support to families.

All families who have completed the ELIM-I measure will receive information about how they can support their child’s language development. However for those families where the ELIM-I measure and/or conversation with the parent/carer has identifed that a child may benefit from additional support for their language development, intevention resources also include additional supporting information, and facilitate practitioners to provide structured support to families.

The aim of intervention is to support parents to be responsive communicators and so support their child’s language development.  Importantly, the intervention is a tailored approach, designed to offer different types and levels of support depending upon the needs of the child and the assets and challenges in the family.

Intervention resources should be used in conjunction with the ELIM-I Practitioner Guide and training resources on this website.

We also invite you to keep in touch and join our ELIM-I community of practice so we can continue to update you about ELIM-I, and hear from you about how you are using ELIM-I.
