Toby Middlebrook

I am originally from Leeds and came up to Newcastle in 2015 to undertake my Masters in Physics. I spend most of my free time socialising with my friends or watching football, as I am an avid Liverpool fan.  Undertaking a PhD sponsored by Dyson has given me the exciting opportunity to work on innovative sustainable technologies. I am investigating the fundamental mechanisms required to deliver high power density, efficient power conversion systems. To fully optimise these systems we need to design across electrical, magnetic, mechanical and thermal domains and carefully manage energy flows, loss densities and heat build-up. The key outputs of my research will be smaller and lighter power converters with reduced reliance of exotic materials and vastly improved operating life.
