Female empowerment
Women who are local to the area of Cameroon are some of the most marginalised in the world.
Their roles within the community are to cook, clean and care and they have very limited rights or freedom or opportunities at achieving a better future for themselves and their families.
Organisations such as the Women's empowerment group, ERuDeF and the Cross River Gorilla Project aim to put an end to this and improve the future opportunities for these women and give them a stronger voice within their communities.
"CAWI seeks to achieve gender equality, empower women and girls through mainstreaming women and gender into sustainable women led programs" the goal of ERuDeF's Centre for the Advancement of Women's Initiatives (CAWI).
There are plans to develop a women and children's centres to allow for everyone to benefit from in a variety of ways, including:
- Being a safe place for local women and children to gather
- Being a constant, lasting reminder of support and strength for women and children
- Establishment of safe study areas for women and children
- Establishment of safe play areas for children within these centres
- Creation of jobs through, construction, general management, establishment of cafes and restaurants, local crafts and goods vendors and a place for conference/important talks to be held
- Hopes to encourage conservation and improve education of conservation
- Allows internet and library access for all to benefit from
The issues with the establishment of these centres is that they are costly, and offer no immediate direct benefit to the communities to which they will be important to - other than the creation of construction jobs.
The centre would also be especially difficult to manage and maintain in a time of an ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Despite the setbacks however, community support for these centres to be made is strong and positive, which is key when enacting change in situations such as these.
