Electro-Flamenko is a collaboration of musicians, dancers and visual artists from around the globe based in the North East of England. From UK, Spain and Italy to Chile and Peru, its members provide a transnational blend of tradition and modernity to create a unique cosmopolitan experience.
The last quarter of the 20th century saw a re-definition of flamenco performance, which was mostly due to the use of musical instruments associated with other styles and to the appropriation of “non-flamenco” performance spaces and practices.
The beginning of the 21st century has witnessed the continued modification of the tradition via new technology, which both creates and reflects new ways of performing flamenco. Electro-Flamenko artists have continued to cross both physical and technological borders, collaborating with other musicians and visual artists to develop contemporary concepts of flamenco performance. Electro-Flamenko redefines flamenco as a musical genre at the beginning of the 21st century encompassing respect for its folkloric tradition, electronic sounds and visual culture. This is a syaesthetic art of music, image and physical motion – and one where social space is defined by a ‘play of forces’ (Arnheim, 1974).
