Civic University
Research to establish and develop the civic role of universities: #trulycivic
This has been a sustained programme of research and engagement with policy makers and practitioners culminating in the establishment of the UK Civic University Commission. The research has been led by Professor John Goddard OBE in the University’s Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies (CURDS). The insights generated have helped a range of universities, in the UK and beyond, to establish and develop their role as civic institutions. It has also shaped the policy discourse nationally and internationally about the importance of the civic role of universities as ‘anchor institutions’. This is particularly relevant to places left behind by globalisation and set in motion a UK wide network to implement recommendations from the research.
