I wanted to do something to bring about a true spirit of inclusion within our university. In my role as an educator on the Medicine and Dentistry programmes, I come into contact with numerous students and staff members who are true unsung heroes. They juggle multiple responsibilities, and grapple with very difficult personal circumstances, sometimes on an unrelenting long-term basis, and I wanted to give them a voice and the opportunity to share the limelight of their more vocal or flamboyant peers and colleagues.

On a personal note, I have some experience of juggling multiple responsibilities being a sole carer of three children for the last 10 years, having to make a significant career change as a result of this and having to sustain a busy and demanding academic career. I am also from a mixed background, and in the UK from an EU country, far away from home and a family and social network to rely on in tricky times.

I was excited to become an intern for this project as its' aims and objectives made a huge impression on me. It is very fulfilling to talk to people from different backgrounds and hear their fascinating stories - people, who usually do not have a voice.

I am an international student so overcoming homesickness was and still is a difficult journey for me as it is for many others. Although often invisible, it is a true burden, and so I wanted to become a part of something that puts light on less apparent struggles of people in our University, yet still focuses on their accomplishments and motivations.
