High Throughput Screening Facility Staff
Peter Banks
Peter trained as a geneticist during his undergrduate degree at Newcastle University. He gained
his PhD studying the role of cohesins in Caenorhabditis elegans, also at Newcastle University
before starting a post doctoral role with David Lydall. It was whilst working on the role of chromatin
modifications in budding yeast that Peter became interested in the use of robotics in Genetic research.
Utilising the unique setup that David Lydall had develped within the Centre for Intergrated Systems
Biology of Ageing and Nutrition, Peter developed the skills that would allow him to move into high
throughput screening.
In 2011 Peter was appointed to run a new facility set up within the Faculty of Medical Sciences at
Newcastle University. Initially offering to run genome wide yeast screens the faculty invested significant
funds to develop mammalian siRNA screening in 2012. Over the following years the screening facility has
continue to develop recruiting a new member of staff Adrian Blackburn
incorporating bacteria and alternative yeasts such as Candida albicans.

Adrian Blackburn
Adrian graduated in Biochemistry and Physiology from Sheffield University and has been
employed as a Research Technician over a wide range of biological sciences, as a teacher
in FE, and in a university spin out company specialising in molecular methods in food
microbiology and DNA-based microbial identification. He joined HTSF in May 2014 and is
involved in running yeast screens.
