- Nessrin's research aims to explore the selective vulnerability of type II muscle fibres to ageing, with a particular interest in sarcopenia, the age-related decline in muscle mass and function
Nessrin completed her BSc in Biomedicine in 2021 and went on to earn her MSc in Human Anatomy at the University of Edinburgh in 2023. In 2024, she joined Newcastle University as a PhD student within the AGE Research Group, focussing on understanding skeletal muscle morphology throughout the human life course. Her research aims to explore the selective vulnerability of type II muscle fibres to ageing, with a particular interest in sarcopenia, the age-related decline in muscle mass and function.
Using muscle samples from the MASS_Lifecourse Study, Nessrin is investigating the factors contributing to type II fibre atrophy. Her research also explores how these factors differ between men and women. The findings aim to improve our understanding of sarcopenia and contribute to the development of new treatments for older adults.
Her work is funded by the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and supervised by Drs. Antoneta Granic, Karen Suetterlin, Davina Simoes, and Prof. Avan Sayer
