Vitamin D in Musculoskeletal Health and Beyond
Since Mellanby first hypothesised that a fat soluble antirachitic factor cured rickets in puppies approximately 100 years ago, interest in the effects of this steroid nutrient/pro-hormone, later named vitamin D, has continued to grow, with a little over 5,000 papers per year published in the recent biomedical literature. In a timely review, Dr Terry Aspray as guest editor, has invited international experts to contribute to a special edition of Calcified Tissue International, presenting state-of-the-art reviews on vitamin D as nutrient, pro-hormone, immune modulator and the effects of vitamin D and its metabolites on musculoskeletal and extra-skeletal function. This edition will be a helpful resource for anyone interested in vitamin D with each of the seven commissioned articles including an extensive bibliography.
