Richard Dodds: BGS Joint Rising Star Award for Research 2020

We are delighted that this year’s British Geriatrics Society Rising Star Award for Research has been jointly awarded to Dr Richard Dodds, from the AGE Research Group, and Dr Atul Anand. Richard is an Honorary Consultant Geriatrician at Newcastle Hospitals and an Intermediate Clinical Fellow at the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre.  He tweets at @dodds_rm.

As a junior doctor, Richard was keen to pursue a career in the healthcare of older people and to undertake further research training after an intercalated degree in human genetics. Fortunately, he was able to combine these two aims in 2009 via an academic clinical fellowship in Geriatric Medicine in the Wessex Deanery – part of a successful scheme established by Avan Sayer, who he has had the privilege of working with for over a decade since.

He went on to a PhD fellowship funded by the Wellcome Trust, working on projects included a highly-cited set of normative data for grip strength. In 2018 he moved to Newcastle to take up a prestigious intermediate clinical fellowship at the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre and based within the AGE Research Group. He continues to carry out research that is motivated by his clinical practice, investigating age-related changes in skeletal muscle.
