Research with older people in a world with COVID-19

AGE Research Group members including Dr Sarah Richardson, Professor Avan Sayer, and Professor Miles Witham have recently led work exploring how research will need to change in a world with COVID if we are to meet the needs of older people. The commentary and position paper (https://doi.org/10.1093/ageing/afaa149) is published in Age and Ageing – a leading international journal of clinical ageing research.

The paper is based on results of a survey of 267 international clinical and research experts in the care of older people, combined with expert opinion from a set of internationally respected authors including colleagues from across the NIHR Clinical Research Network. The work identifies the top priorities for COVID-19 related research for older people, as well as providing guidance on how to re-engineer the research process so that it can continue in a world with living with COVID-19. The priorities and guidance outlined in the paper should enable a more coordinated response to COVID-19 research for older people by researchers, funders, policymakers and healthcare organisations – a response that will be critical in mitigating the impact of the first pandemic wave and in preparing for any future waves.
