Recruiting and training future clinicians and scientists

Over recent weeks members of the AGE Research Group and NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) have be involved in some fantastic events and training opportunities for early career clinicians and scientists.

Starting in September, Prof Miles Witham and Dr Richard Dodds joined NIHR Newcastle BRC Training Lead Dr Ellen Tullo to present at the North East Geriatric Medicine Registrars’ training morning to promote research to Medicine Trainees.  This was followed by a careers fair attended by Prof Avan Sayer and Richard for Foundation Programme doctors working at NuTH NHS Foundation Trust to promote Geriatric Medicine and Research to early career medics; Richard also gave a talk at the Annual Clinical Academic Training Pathway Scientific Meeting to promote the work of the BRC and advertise opportunities available to trainees.

Earlier in October, Avan and Ellen presented at the NIHR Newcastle BRC trainees meeting, focused on “Future proofing your research career”. Several of the trainees shared their experiences of the national NIHR Academy training opportunities they had taken part in.  A highlight of the meeting was a speed mentoring session with Dr Chris Hurst, Dr Antoneta Granic and Richard, to offer valuable advice to the NIHR Newcastle BRC trainees, and provide insights into careers from a range of disciplines.
