Rachel Cooper joins AGE as Professor of Translational Epidemiology

We are delighted to announce that Professor Rachel Cooper has joined Newcastle University as a member of the AGE Research Group & NIHR Newcastle BRC.

In her role as Professor of Translational Epidemiology, Rachel applies her expertise in life course epidemiology to the study of healthy ageing, with a focus on physical capability, musculoskeletal health and function and multiple long-term conditions.  She has extensive experience of working with large population-based longitudinal studies including the older national British birth cohort studies and recently has also begun working with electronic health records data. The ultimate goals of her research are to improve people’s chances of remaining active and independent in later life and to reduce lifetime inequalities in these chances. 

In 2021, Rachel was named on Clarivate’s annual ‘Highly Cited Researchers List’ (cross-field category) in recognition of her involvement in the production of multiple highly-cited papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and year in the Web of Science. She is a co-applicant on both the newly funded ART of Healthy Ageing Network and the UKRINIHR funded ADMISSION Research Collaborative  where she is lead for the Inequalities and Statistics work packages.  

She is also Professor of Musculoskeletal Epidemiology at Manchester Metropolitan University and splits her time between Newcastle and Manchester.
