Prof Witham discusses sarcopenia & frailty at Northern Vascular Meeting
Sarcopenia, frailty and geriatric medicine were very much on the agenda at the recent Northern Vascular meeting, held at Jesmond Dene House in Newcastle on Friday the 4th of November. Professor Miles Witham spoke to a multidisciplinary vascular surgical audience on the topic of sarcopenia and frailty, covering what these conditions are, why they are important and how we should diagnose them.
He was joined by Presidential faculty; Professor Jugdeep Dhesi (newly elected president-elect of the British Geriatrics Society) was the keynote speaker, discussing how to set up perioperative optimization clinics for older people, and Miss Rachel Bell, President-elect of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland, spoke on aortic dissection.
The meeting was attended by around 60 delegates – a mix of vascular surgeons, vascular technicians and specialist nurses, pharmacists and geriatricians. Trainees and colleagues presented short abstracts later in the afternoon following a convivial lunch which strengthened links between the geriatric medicine and vascular surgical communities. The meeting was organised by Mr Sandip Nandhra and we look forward to continuing to our collaboration on research on frailty and sarcopenia in vascular surgical patients that Sandip leads here in Newcastle.
