New Paper Published

Although the health benefits of physical activity (PA) are firmly established, little is known about PA in older age, particularly among the very old. A new paper led by Dr Antoneta Granic (AGE Senior Research Associate) addresses this gap: the PA levels of 845 participants in the Newcastle 85+ Study were examined. At baseline, low PA was reported by 23% of participants, with 43% reporting medium, and 34% high levels.  Over a 5-year follow-up period, overall PA declined.  However, for some older participants, PA levels were stable and for some, they increased. Surprisingly, factors linked to higher PA at baseline, such as being in better health, did not predict the 5-year changes seen in PA.  Research to improve understanding of influences on PA behaviour in older age is needed to inform interventions for at-risk groups.
