New paper on multiple long-term conditions and emergency hospital admissions
In a new ADMISSION publication from the AGE Research Group, we describe how multiple long-term conditions (MLTC) relate to increased likelihood of emergency hospital admission. The paper, published in the Journal of Internal Medicine, uses data from the UK Biobank study. It compares four different methods of characterising MLTC. Although the prevalence of MLTC varied markedly depending on the method used, people with higher scores using any one of the four methods had higher rates of emergency hospital admission and death over a five-year period. In contrast, all four approaches had only modest ability to identify individuals at risk.
This study confirms that multiple long-term conditions have a significant impact on people’s lives, as well as healthcare systems. It forms part of our ongoing work to understand and improve hospital treatment for people whose needs are more complex because of MLTC.
