Major review on Sarcopenia published in Nature Reviews Disease Primers
We’re delighted to announce the publication of a Nature Reviews Disease Primer on Sarcopenia, led by members of the AGE Research Group and the Ageing, Sarcopenia and Multimorbidity Theme within the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre.
This paper is the culmination of an 18-month-long project bringing together a team of global experts to summarise the latest evidence on the diagnosis, epidemiology, biological mechanisms, and management of Sarcopenia.
Building on the success of last year’s International Sarcopenia Translational Research Conference, this paper continues our work to highlight the importance of sarcopenia; a highly prevalent age-related condition characterised by the accelerated loss of skeletal muscle mass and function. It does this by providing a state-of-the-art summary of the latest research on Sarcopenia to reach a wide audience including biomedical scientists and clinicians in the early stages of their careers.
The paper also shines a spotlight on lived experiences. We are incredibly grateful to the older people identified via our Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement events who shared their experiences of age-related decline in muscle function with us. As a result of their generosity our summary of the impact of sarcopenia on quality of life has been brought to life.
Looking ahead, we will continue our work to lead and support transformative research collaborations on sarcopenia across continents, enabling this condition to be better recognised, understood and managed across all areas of the world.
