Let’s talk research….at a GP Practice

Members of the AGE Research Group and the Northumbria Primary Care Research Team hosted a successful first coffee morning together at Cramlington Medical Group on Wednesday 5 March. The aim of the coffee morning was to raise awareness of ageing research and to talk to the public about the different ways that they can contribute, so that research is relevant, useful and beneficial to everyone.

Helen Atkinson (Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement manager) and Katie Kucukcan (Research Nurse) set out their stall in the foyer of the practice and members of the public were warmly invited to have a coffee and chat following their medical appointments. This provided a wonderful opportunity to meet with members of the public, many of whom had an interest in learning more about why research into ageing is important. Katie talked about different types of research studies and answered questions that the public had about being involved in a study.

Helen Atkinson said: “It was fantastic to work with Mandy Cuthbert and her colleagues from the Northumbria Primary Care Research Team. We hope to host further coffee mornings in the future”.

Copies of the Let’s Talk Research booklet were available and the public were encouraged to sign up to our Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) contact list to hear about future opportunities to be involved.

The AGE Research Group and Northumbria Primary Care have worked together for many years to recruit research participants from local communities, and this was a fantastic opportunity to collaborate and deliver our first public engagement event.
