Guest Speaker: Professor Rebecca Hardy, Director of CLOSER

Professor Rebecca Hardy, Director of CLOSER (Cohort and Longitudinal Studies Enhancement Resources) and Professor of Epidemiology and Medical Statistics at University College London, visited the AGE Research Group on 11^th July.  As well as meeting up with members of the team, Rebecca gave an excellent AGE Research Group & BRC Seminar.  She described the work of CLOSER, including discussion of methods of data harmonisation across studies and the potential of cross-cohort analyses to show how health is changing in the UK - highlighting how it can inform health policy.  For example, in her own research, Rebecca has shown that recent increases in obesity in the population are not evenly spread.  As greater changes are found in more disadvantaged groups, new preventive strategies may be needed to avoid widening future inequalities in health in older age.
