Final findings published from the LiLL-OPM study
The final paper from the Lifestyle in Later Life – Older People’s Medicine (LiLL-OPM) Study has recently been published in BMC Geriatrics by members of the AGE Research Group.
This paper presents the main findings from the project which successfully recruited older people living with multiple long-term conditions, frailty, and a recent deterioration in health. This is a group who are typically underserved by research.
In collaboration with clinical colleagues within the Department of Older People’s Medicine at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the LiLL-OPM study explored the feasibility and acceptability of carrying out a research project with this group of older people.
The study used a mixed methods approach to conduct a comprehensive assessment combining questionnaires and in-depth interviews to understand the health and lifestyle of the participants and their experiences of and attitudes towards research. Several barriers and facilitators to research participation were identified and these findings will help to support the design and delivery of future research involving this population group.
The published paper concludes that it is feasible and acceptable to recruit and carry out research with this underserved group of older adults. Participants found taking part in this research to be acceptable, reported overall positive experiences of their involvement in the study, and indicated that they would be willing to contribute to further research in the future.
