Dr Chris Hurst awarded funding to involve older people in research discussions

Dr Chis Hurst recently led a successful funding application to Engage FMS to support a new project: Let’s talk research: Involving older people with multiple long-term conditions and frailty in discussions about research. This funding scheme celebrates excellence in Public and Patient Engagement and Involvement (PPIE) and is dedicated to the memory of Tilly Hale, LIVErNORTH. 

Chris comments: “Older People living with multiple long-term health conditions and frailty are typically underserved by research. This project aims to identify and engage with a group of patients and their carers and involve them in conversations about research to understand how we can best design and deliver research that meets their needs”

Recruiting patients and their carers through the Older People’s Medicine Research Liaison Service (Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals), a dedicated contact will act as a “buddy” to engage and support participants, communicating with them regularly throughout the project and involving them in conversations about research. The valuable feedback we get from the participants in this project will help to shape our research plans and enable us to improve how we offer research opportunities to patients living with multiple long-term conditions and frailty.
