Data collection begins on the BEPOP project

Data collection began last week for the Benchmarking Exercise Programmes for Older People (BEPOP) project, an innovative new UK-wide service improvement initiative aimed at improving exercise interventions for older people living with sarcopenia and frailty. BEPOP is a collaboration between the AGE Research Group, AGILE – the professional network of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy for therapists specialising in the care of older people, and the British Geriatrics Society (BGS), who are funding the first wave of data collection.

Although resistance exercise training has been established as an effective intervention in sarcopenia and frailty, survey work by the BGS Sarcopenia and Frailty Research special interest group demonstrated great variation in the type, intensity and duration of exercise offered to older people with sarcopenia or frailty. BEPOP brings together physiotherapy teams from across the UK to report on the exercise interventions they currently deliver with the aim of identifying which components are associated with best outcomes for patients. Our first cohort of ten participating centres from across the UK have already begun submitting data with more sites planned to start in the near future.

A truly multidisciplinary endeavour, BEPOP demonstrates the ongoing commitment of healthcare professionals across the UK to continued service improvement and development as services reset and adapt to the needs of the older population following the COVID-19 pandemic.

By benchmarking against the most effective real-world practice, the project aims to develop a series of realistic and effective recommendations for best practice in the delivery of exercise interventions for sarcopenia. Through ongoing cycles of assessment, benchmarking and feedback, BEPOP will Enable practitioners to adapt and improve the content of their exercise programmes, ensuring the best outcomes for older people with sarcopenia and frailty.

The BEPOP project would like to thank our first cohort of centres for leading on this exciting new project. To find out more information about the BEPOP project please visit www.bepop.org.uk.
