AGE Research Group hosts a visit from Dr Stephen Lim, University of Southampton

The AGE Research Group were delighted to host a visit from Dr Stephen Lim, who is a Principal Clinical Research Fellow and Honorary Consultant Geriatrician based at University of Southampton and University Hospital Southampton (UHS).

Clinically, Dr Lim works as an Orthogeriatrician on the orthopaedics department, caring for older adults with falls and fractures. He is the medical lead for Falls at UHS. Stephen’s research centres on clinical trials and other studies to improve health and care of older people, with a particular focus on physical activity, nutrition and digital intervention. He leads a programme of work exploring hospital-associated deconditioning (HAD) and developing novel interventions to ameliorate the deleterious effects of HAD.

As well as meeting with members of the AGE Research Group, Stephen gave an excellent seminar to the wider NIHR Newcastle BRC, members of the FMS LTC & MM theme and colleagues from Older People’s Medicine at Newcastle Hospitals, entitled ‘Engaging older adults in physical activity’. Physical activity has multiple benefits for older adults, including reducing falls risk, improvement in physical function and mental well-being. Despite the clear benefits of physical activity, engagement in regular physical activity among older adults remains low. The seminar highlighted some of the innovative approaches undertaken to engage older adults in hospital and in the community to remain active to reduce the risk of functional decline and deconditioning and to support older adults to make healthier lifestyle changes.
