AGE Research Group experts give evidence to House of Lords Select Committee

Professor Avan Sayer and Professor Miles Witham from the AGE research group have both given evidence to the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee in the last two weeks. The Select Committee is holding hearings on the science of ageing, and how new breakthroughs in our understanding of the ageing process can help to deliver the aspiration of five more years of healthy life expectancy by 2035.

The Lords heard evidence on the biology of ageing, on work being doing in Newcastle to better understand the epidemiology of ageing, ways to improve lifestyle across the life course to improve healthy ageing, the need for translational research to bring new discoveries in ageing biology through to the clinic, and the need for clinical trials to enrol older people and those with multimorbidity and polypharmacy.

Avan and Miles highlighted several areas where the AGE group and the wider NIHR Newcastle BRC are making a real impact in this field, and there was plenty of interest both from the Select Committee and from the accompanying journalists, with articles in the Telegraph, Guardian and Mail on line.
