Medieval and Early Modern Studies @ Newcastle

The Medieval and Early Modern Studies @ Newcastle research group brings together Newcastle's research expertise in medieval and early modern studies up to c. 1800.

Our goal is to stimulate interdisciplinary and collaborative research through hosting symposia where internal and external speakers discuss a shared research interest, by organising conferences on interdisciplinary themes and by supporting members' research.
We are happy to support particularly Postgraduate Students and early career researchers who are organised in NEMS, the student-run branch of Newcastle University Medieval and Early Modern Society. NEMS promotes interdisciplinary networking and collaboration between Medieval and Early Modern postgraduate researchers working at universities in North-East England.

Textual editing is a major strength within MEMS and we have developed a web-portal to highlight this ongoing work. In 2010/11 we inaugurated our Distinguished Speakers programme with papers from Peter Kornicki, Quentin Skinner and Sanjay Subramanyam and in 2012 we will co-host that Series with Newcastle's Lit&Phil under the aegis of the HaSS Faculty's Societal Challenge theme: Social Renewal.

Each year, MEMS also supports an emerging research interest within the Faculty, and this year, in addition to our commitments to the Social Renewal theme, we are focusing on early modern European and Japanese print culture.

MEMS is part of the Newcastle Institute for the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities
