  • The role of inhibitory interneurons in the prefrontal cortex of patients with post-stroke dementia and other dementias

Executive dysfunction is a major hallmark of dementia. Executive function is controlled by three circuits within the prefrontal cortex: the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the anterior cingulate cortex and the orbitofrontal cortex. Within these regions, pyramidal neurons form connections between different aspects of the circuits, creating networks of axons sending excitatory signals across different parts of the brain. Another type of neuron, interneurons, inhibit these pyramidal cells. It is the balance between these neurons which allows the brain to function as it does. We hope to investigate this balance to determine if it is involved in the development of post-stroke dementia.
