  • Crime and Women in Colonial India: Society and Gender Roles, 1900-20

The project focuses on the history of crime against women and the involvement of women in crime during the colonial period. There has been a lot of attention towards the sexual violence women face in north India today. Research has shown that domestic gender roles and attitudes towards the segregation of women have shaped the kind of violence women face. However, although some aspects of the historical relationship between crime and women have been explored, and considerable sociological research exists on crimes against women in contemporary Indian society, no major study of the topic exists for the colonial period.
