  • The mantra of "food miles": will sourcing locally-produced food save the planet?

Area: Newcastle Institute for Research on Sustainability
Industry:
Retail
Topic: An investigation into the regional impacts of globalised food-miles
Current Issue: Globalisation has led to the high rates of international trade. Retailers can import products on a global scale, resulting in “food miles”, the total distance between production and the point of sale.
These food miles create a number of negative externalities, which impact on environmental, social and economic issues.
Aims: This research project will focus on the current concept of Food Miles, the local economic environment affecting global supply chains, evaluating the market impact of Food Miles over focus areas and listing potential improvements.
