  • MRI volumetric analysis of substantia innominata in dementia with Lewy bodies and Alzheimer’s disease

One-hundred and twenty-seven participants over the age of 60 were involved in the study. All subjects underwent clinical and neuropsychological assessments including measures of fluctuating cognition and hallucinations. In all subjects, T1 weighted MR imaging data were acquired followed by manual segmentation of the substantia innominata (SI). Volumetric SI measurements were expressed as % of their total intracranial volumes (TIV).Results showed that relative to controls, significant volumetric reductions to the SI were apparent in AD (p<0.001) but not DLB (p=0.2). These volumetric changes in AD also appear to be associated with dementia severity.
