  • Image, the Bantu and the Boer: An investigation of racial representations of Indigenous South Africans and Boers in nineteenth century British periodical images.

The research consists of investigating how the concept of race in South Africa was represented in British periodicals between 1815 and 1899. The research project involves the use of historical Archives to identify and analyse cartoon images in a variety of British periodicals published during this period with a view to understanding how the concept of race was represented through periodical images, the extent to which these representations varied in different publications and readerships, and the extent to which the representations constitute a form of cultural violence as well as the implications of this.
