  • An exploration of areas of colour space expanded for ‘colour blind’ observers.

Normal colour vision depends on three types of cone, but in 6% of men one of these cone types is a hybrid form and such men are commonly diagnosed as colour deficient on clinical tests. However, an expansion in colour space can be demonstrated if the stimuli are chosen to optimally exploit the spectral position of this hybrid cone. Thus, there exist colours that can be discriminated by anomalous observers, but not by normal observers. Our aim was to create appropriate stimuli for psychophysical tests biased toward anomalous observers.
