  • Shared decision making in secondary care (outpatients) consultations: pilot testing patient experience questionnaires

Shared decision making (SDM) is a process whereby clinicians and patients communicate together using the most reliable evidence to reach an informed decision. Making Good Decisions In Collaboration (MAGIC) is a programme whose purpose is to evaluate methods of implementing and embedding SDM in clinical practice. Part of the evaluation process involves asking patients about their SDM experience through brief questionnaires following a consultation. Distribution and collection of questionnaires were made along with data entry and preliminary analysis and testing of the SDM questionnaires revealed a ceiling effect in patients’ responses.
