  • The biological role of PBP3 in B. subtilis

Biological function of penicillin binding protein 3 (PBP3) in Bacillus subtilis (encoded by the pbpC gene) showed potential similarities to the penicillin resistance determinant mecA (PBP2a) of Staphylococcus aureus. It enhances the sensitivity of Bacillus to specific b-lactams.  The aims of the project were to carry further study on PBP3 in B. subtilis to extend our understanding on its biological function. The project aimed to assay the level of PBP3 expression under a variety of conditions, identify the promoter region of the pbpC gene, determine PBP3 subcellular localization under normal and antibiotics affected conditions and evaluate PBP3 contribution to the intrinsic resistance of B. subtilis to b-lactams resistance.
