Body Shape Validation Study

Obesity is a significant global health challenge. Body measurements are a helpful tool for estimating the risk of poor health and development of related diseases. Understanding where a person mostly stores fat on their body can help health care professionals best identify those with the highest risks.  But, taking some of these body measurements can be difficult to perform and time-consuming.   Simple tools, such as pictures that ask people to self-identify their body shape, have been available for many years, but usually measure satisfaction with body shape.  This study aims to test whether women can accurately self-identify their body shape using picture-based tools compared to physical body measurements.  If these picture-based tools help women to identify their body shape correctly, it may be possible to use them, as a cheap and quick alternative, in research studies with large populations.
