Abstract:

Digital scholarly editions are one of the oldest and most prolific forms of output of digital humanities projects, and arguably one of the most prolific. However, like many digital outputs, they also have a cost that is often not only financial; but it may also include the ability to access institutional infrastructure.

The principles of low tech and minimal computing have informed new ways of undertaking digital humanities projects, focusing on use of open technologies and ownership of data and code.

In this talk I discuss how this open, low tech and minimal approach can be a solution for the development of digital scholarly editing projects in the Global South, where access to infrastructure such as web hosting or even reliable and affordable Internet access is limited, but I also highlight the possibilities for a low-infrastructure future of the "global" digital edition.
