Abstract:

Back in 2017, James Cummings told us in the context of a presentation on interactive visualisations: "We need to admit that our digital scholarly editions contain a lot of useful data other than the edited text". A data-centric approach to editions will be the starting point for this talk, which will explore the current state of the art in the use of semantic web technologies in scholarly editing. The Web of Data offers the possibility of expressing, in a human- and machine-readable way, statements found in the text or added by editors interpreting texts and documents. The talk will give an overview of the resources (ontologies and vocabularies) used and usable in scholarly editing in general and then focus on genetic editing. The benefits and challenges of working towards semantic editions will be discussed, possibly with the audience.
