The research will apply a mixed methods approach, comprising in-depth semi-structured interviews, focus groups and ethnographic observations and conversations.
1. In-depth semi-structured interviews is the principal method for data gathering and will be used to engage and listen to a wide variety of Muslim participants. Firstly, we will carry out interviews with politically active Muslims that are in publicly prominent positions in Scottish society. In addition, we aim to carry out interviews with politically active Muslims that are in less publically prominent positions, providing narratives of Muslim political participation ‘from below’.
2. Focus Groups will be used in each of the selected cities. This method will assist in accessing participants and provide an environment of dialogue and debate.
3. Ethnographic observations and informal conversations will also be utilised when possibilities to campaign and canvass with participants arise.
