The Ways Ahead project is funded by The Brain Tumour Charity. They are the world's leading brain tumour charity and offer a wide range of information and support for people living with a brain tumour and their friends and family.
This page will detail how the Ways Ahead project aligns with the charity's research strategy. For a breakdown of what kind of support is offered by the charity, as well as the information and support line available to contact the charity, please see the 'Support' page.
The Brain Tumour Charity Research Strategy
The Brain Tumour Charity commissioned research entitled "Losing Myself: The reality of life with a brain tumour". The article indicates that, for adults, living with and beyond a brain tumour has a substantial adverse effect on a range of issues that contribute to quality of life, including symptoms, physical functioning, psychological wellbeing, and social relationships. The impact also extends to family members who live with, support and help care for people living with a brain tumour.
How the Ways Ahead project meets the Charity's research strategy
There is evidence from other conditions that supported self-management can be effective in helping people cope with, adjust to, manage and improve all of these consequences of living with illness. This project – which is a first in adult brain tumours - is the first step in developing, testing and implementing a supported self-management programme aimed at improving quality of life among adults living with a primary brain tumour.
Through the completion of the Ways Ahead project, we will directly address the following aspects of The Brain Tumour Charity's research strategy:
- Goal 2: "Halve the harm that brain tumours have on quality-of-life"
- Help meet the key objective "Improving life today" which seeks to provide support and information to every person living with a brain tumour to help improve their quality-of-life.
- Alignment with the "Enhance" priority as it will lead to enhanced care and quality-of-life for everyone affected by a brain tumour, including people with lived experience and their family/friends.
