Mark has a research background in social anthropology and experience of various UK and overseas based interdisciplinary research projects. Having implemented a range of social science research methods, he specialises in the use of ethnography. His research interests centre on issues of power, identity, cultural creativity and change, informal innovations, and notions of resilience. Mark has experience of implementing qualitative research methodologies that explore complex viewpoints, attitudes and motivations around waste generation, waste management, and notions of environmental sustainability. His methods are particularly useful in revealing the cultural framings and power-interplays that contextualise decisions around waste practice, by investigating the varied perspectives, viewpoints and definitions of waste, recycling and environmentalism. Currently based in the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences of Newcastle University, Mark works on an inter-disciplinary EPSRC funded research project considering the resilient qualities of the built infrastructure.
