Wickham, James (TCD)

James is Jean Monnet Professor of European Labour Market Studies in the Department of Sociology at Trinity College Dublin. Within the university he has been involved in a series of initiatives to integrate use of information technology within the undergraduate curriculum. His original research includes a PhD on the labour movement in Weimar Germany and since then he has researched and published on Irish industrialisation and labour market issues.

James is Director of the Employment Research Centre which carries out research into Irish labour market issues, in particular skills and equal opportunities. He is currently researching the migration of skilled knowledge workers (computer scientists, electronics engineers) within Europe, and is writing a book on European social structure. He has recently developed an interest in the social aspects of sustainable transport systems.

Boucher, Gerard W.(TCD)

Gerry is a Research Fellow at the Employment Research Centre, Department of Sociology, Trinity College Dublin. Within the UNIREG project, he is undertaking research on the role of Irish universities in Ireland's regional development. He is currently completing his dissertation entitled `The Small Island Scarcely Heard: Ireland's British, European, Global and Developing World Integrations and Identities'. His research focuses on the influence of Ireland's multiple integrations on the interests, strategies and identities of members of the Irish political class particularly with respect to Ireland's trajectory of national development. The work further examines similarities and differences between Irish sectoral integrations comparing in this case the educational, industrial relations and agricultural sectors of Irish society.

Gerry's other academic interests include ethnic and racial studies. In this context, he has completed a report on racism and international students in Ireland for the Irish Council for International Students, funded by the EU Commission during the European Year Against Racism in 1997.
