Virtual residencies

Since the Covid19 pandemic the international arts sector has been experimenting with new ways of approaching artists’ residencies. Welcoming and recognising these moves, and to test out potential new models for contemporary art in heritage practice, this project is supporting four heritage-based virtual pilot residencies for international (primarily non-UK based) visual artists. These pilot virtual residencies have been co-developed by Newcastle University and our four chosen residency hosts – AHRDO, Bateman’s, Van Gogh House and 575 Wandsworth Road, in consultation with our UK project partners, National Trust, the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience (ICSC), and the Artist’s Studio Museum Network.

The residencies aim to provide a flexible opportunity for each artist to find out about and virtually explore their host site, its history and collections, to hold online conversations with site staff, volunteers and local communities, and to formulate an initial creative response to their virtual residency experience.

The four virtual residencies will run between June and September 2024.
